Vava'u is a lot more
than one of the world's most popular yachting centers, it's also a
renowned water sports destination. The cyan and deep blue waters
surrounding the group's quaint seaside capital city of Neiafu fill
with sails and whales from early June through October. And, because
of its ideal climate, water sports and leisure activities are
enjoyed throughout the year.
Vava'u features a
water sports venue to suit every interest. Visitors find a full
range of marine activities to choose from, including diving and
snorkeling, whale watching and sailing, kayaking in the local
harbour or on outer-island tours.
Sailing and yachting are very popular in the Kingdom of Tonga and
sailing enthusiasts may choose from independent charters weeks, or
maybe for a few days.
There are a variety of day trips also, through a myriad of
intriguing islets that comprise the Vava'u Group. |
Today's whalers arm
themselves with Canons and Nikons to record their first encounters
with these gentle leviathons, hoping for an acrobatic display they
can enjoy now, and photograph for posterity. In small boats, spirits
are high and camera buttons flicker as eager eyes watch the
humpbacks frolic with their newborn calves in the tropical sea.
In May the whales first appear in Vava'u, where they birth, then
train their next generation of calves how to survive the long trip
homeward to Antarctica in early November. |
Divers and
snorkelers explore an underwater wonderland filled with coral reef
life and exotic fishes in water temperatures of 23C in winter and
30C in summer, and crystal clear to approximately 50 meters depth.
They cite personalized service and a vast array of diving and
snorkeling venues as reasons to choose Vava'u. |
Vava'u is blessed
with dozens of pristine islands and islets that give picnicking on
the beach a totally new perspective.
Nuku Island, one of our most popular picnic and BBQ destinations.
Great swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, or just relaxing on the beach.

The Blue is the
Ferrari of all marlins, naturally everyone wants to catch one.
Vava'u is Marlin Country, recording astounding numbes of catches,
and tag and releases not only in tournaments, but in recreational
outings, too.
Its proximity to one of the deepest troughs in the Pacific - the
Tongan Trench - ensures a steady food supply for mighty marlins and
other game fish for which Vava'u is famous. When Tonga hosted their
very first International Gamefishing Association tournament, Vava'u
was the natural choice and has very successfully continued to host
TIGFA, which is one of the most popular game fishing tournaments in
the South Pacific.
Everyone has a fair go at gamefishing here in the Kingdom's water
wonderland, Vava'u.
One of the most tasty fish in the sea, the mahi mahi, is one that
frequently graces Tongan tables. |
Neiafu's quaint,
seaside flavour emanates from both man-made and natural
architecture; but it's those smiling faces across the town that
you'll remember, too!
It's the cathedral, built by Marist missionaries in the early 1830s,
that catches your eye during that initial stroll along Fatafehi
road. It's the main road in the business district of Neiafu,
parallel to the harbour that locals call "Old Lolo". (Lolo means
coconut oil).
Another memorable first sight, if you're lucky to be in town beneath
the full moon on a still night, is a gaze across the harbour; that's
when you'll discover the essence of Old Lolo. |
Resorts throughout
the Kingdom of Tonga provide their guests with fascinating cultural
dance performances like this one. Watching is only half the fun
because feasting is the other part of what is known in Tonga as a
fiefia.
Every July 4th sees Tonga's Royal marching band leading the
King's birthday parade. Loyal subjects and visitors alike align
Nuku'alofa's Vuna and Taufa'ahau roads to cheer. Not far behind come
floats adorned with Miss Heilala contestants to join the fun.
This year's top four
in the Miss Heilala Pageant, like their predecessors,
competed in overseas and outer-island pageants to qualify for their
final quest for glory.
The reigning Miss Heilala will represent Tonga in the Miss South
Pacific Pageant, held regionally.
One of the many things visitors travelling to Tonga remark about is
it's ancient culture; highly visible in daily lifestyles and notably
in full force during important celebrations. Ancient Polynesian
pride abounds during the King's birthday celebrations, which span
the week encompassing the 4th of July. Sports, song and dance
competitions dot the week-long affair, which culminates in the
crowning of Miss Heilala who will reign for a year.
An award-winning Miss Heilala float carries a former Miss Ha'apai
along Vuna road in Nuku'alofa.
