Beachfront accommodation 

 

All our fales are completely private with only the sounds of the sea against the shore, the birds and at night you may hear the Whales breaching or pectoral slapping. All fales have Kingsize beds (2 fales can be converted to a twin room). All fales have toilet, hot shower (califont operated), 12 volt fans and private sun decks. Beach towels are provided and your room is cleaned down everyday.
 
The fales are linked to the restaurant/bar through beautiful coconut fringed bush walkways or you can just wander along the beach. Your never are more than a 5 minute walk from a refreshing cocktail or ice cold beer.
Honeymoons and Special occasions
 Our Honeymoon fale sits on the waters edge on the northern side of the island with its own beach and total privacy.
If your looking for somewhere special to celebrate we would love to help.  We have been lucky enough to help many of our guests arrange once in a lifetime surprises and just arriving at this piece of Paradise in Tonga is a great start.
We are more than happy to arrange for a romantic candle lit dinner to be served on the deck of your fale if desired.
 A complimentary bottle of champagne is provided to welcome you.
Please note: The Tongan Government is currently amending the Marriages Act to allow weddings to be conducted in Tonga without the current mandatory 3 months residency. Once the revised Act is passed by Parliament we will be in a position to conduct weddings on Mounu.

GREAT FOOD SERVED ON VAVAU'S FINEST BEACH!

The warm waters of Vavau provide an abundance of seafood.  The freshest Tuna, Marlin, Wahoo, Coral Trout, Snapper and Lobster all feature on the menu.
 
Organic locally grown produce is the main source of seasonal vegetables and fruit. Bread is baked daily on the Island.
Organic meat and chicken is flown in direct from NZ and compliments the local vavau produce perfectly.

The menu is table d’ hote and based on Pacific Rim style.  Our
chef is happy to discuss the day’s menu and accommodate any special dietary needs you may have.  Because of problems providing certain specialist foods we do not cater for Vegans.
 
Our bar, Moby Dick’s stocks a reasonable range of white/red wines, liqueurs, spirits and beer.  Specialty tropical cocktails are available for that real beach feel. 
 
We can provide a picnic hamper and you can either kayak or we can transfer you to an uninhabited Island for the day for a beach picnic.

WHALE WATCHING IN VAVAU
The warm waters surrounding Vava'u make ideal calfing and mating grounds for the magnificent Humpback Whale. Getting up close and personal with these magnificent animals is a once in alifetime experience and we recommend whale watching in Vavau to all our visitors.
 
The Southern Humpback Whale migrates to Tonga from Antartica, a journey of 6000 miles. From the month of July through to November the whales can been seen and heard frollocking.
 
Whale Watch Vavau has two capable vessels available for charter, so you can get up close and personal with them. Phoenix and Lulutahi were purpose built in New Zealand. Lulutahi has seating for 16 passengers, ladder for easy access to and from the water, life jackets and safety equipment, toilet and viewing platform. We have a hydrophone onboard so listening to the males song is possible. Some days the song will ring clearly through the hull of the boat.
 
We also have a range of snorkelling gear available free of charge. Phoenix has seating for 8 passengers and all other equipment that is mentioned above for Lulutahi. Cost per person per day (6 hours) is $US125.
 
* From 2004 we will be taking a maximum of 12 passengers only, no over crowding for a more intimate experience. Phoenix our other whale watching vessels is used exclusively for Mounu Island Resort guests, however when not in charter with guests she becomes available to the public.
Code and Conduct when whale watching:
We were the first licensed operator in Vavau and Tonga and have been operating now for over 10 years. We have qualified local guides and experienced crew aboard, who are there to ensure your safety and to find you whales!
We DO NOT harass the whales in anyway.
Conditions permitting, we can take you snorkeling with the whales in addition to whale watching. This is done in small guided groups. Come away with the team choosen by, Channel 7 Australia, Natural History Unit BBC. French Film, Japanese Underwater Films, TVNZ, Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2001, David Attenborough for BBC1 Humpback Whale Special, Chuck and Flip Nicklin for National Geographic magazine as well as numerous other media related people.

There are several operators to choose from.  Whether you are an experienced diver or require a Resort Course we can assist in finding the right operator to suit your needs.
 With visibility reaching up to 70 metres and a range of uncrowded World class dive sites its the perfect spot for diving, learning to dive or snorkeling.
 In addition to the whales you will find hard and soft corals, dolphins, turtles, manta rays and heaps more in this natural aquarium There are several operators to choose from.  Whether you are an experienced diver or require a Resort Course we can assist in finding the right operator to suit your needs.
 
Snorkeling
Bring you own snorkel equipment or be provided with a set for you stay while on Mounu Island.  Snorkeling off the beach is easily accessible and teeming with fish life and stunning corals.  
Tonga is a true pacific paradise for those who love snorkeling. You can bring you own snorkel equipment or be provided with a set for you stay while on Mounu Island.  You can snorkel from anywhere on the island and most fales have excellent snorkeling on their beachfront. The beach is easily accessible and teeming with fish life and stunning corals. 
 One of the staff is happy to take you for a guided tour.  We can arrange a boat trip to other snorkel spots including, Swallows Cave, Mariners Cave, Eua Kafa and A’a.
 We have snorkeled with the Humpback whales right off the Island and that was before breakfast.!
 
Fish Feeding
Ask for a chunk of bread and feed the snappers off the beach in front of Moby Dicks.
 
Big Game Fishing
There are a number of operators who can take you out to land a Mahi Mahi, Marlin, Tuna or Wahoo.  Vava’u is recognized as one of the top Blue Marlin spots in the world. Your chef will prepare your catch just the way you like it. Kiwi Magic, Ika Lahi, Target One, Dora Maria are some of the boats you may like to choose.
 
Kayaking
We have a couple of Kayaks available for you to paddle around the island or across to Ovalau the neighboring uninhabited Island to the west of Mounu.

We can arrange a picnic for you to take with you and we even have a couple of fishing rods if you feel like a real Robinson Crusoe experience.  Our staff will take time to show you how to use the kayaks, paddle and stay dry!
 
Its only about a 10 minute paddle to the deserted island across from us and the water is relatively shallow.
 
Kiteboarding
Bring your kite and board or hire gear.  Mounu is the perfect location for beginners/
intermediate riders.  Instruction by IKO Instructor available. Kiteboarding packages – coming soon.
 
Kick back and Relax
The library is well stocked with a variety of books to suit everyone’s tastes, grab and book and hit the hammock.
 
Star gazing
The telescope is set up in the Main building and we will help you spot the Southern Cross and other stars.
 
Bird Watching
Tonga is home to many land and sea birds.  We can organize a ˝ day land tour with Eva who will take you to view the endemic Tongan Whistler, only found in Vava’u group.  Tide and weather permitting we can visit Maninita, an island to the south of Mounu where during the season you can see up to 19 types of birds.  The Booby, Terns and Noddies all nest here.
